This is the inside of our building. We have 4 studios with machines and pattern
making tables. There is also a
specialist machine room with stretch machines, button holers and sewers, blind
hemming and presses.

It looks like you have great spaces to work in, does the school have a good economy?
ReplyDeleteYes, we are lucky to have great facilities, although we are constantly trying to improve or upgrade our equipment. At the moment we are government funded, but we must apply for funding for equipment. When we apply for funding we compete for a limited amount of money against all other programmes in the institute. Our funding model is currently changing, in the future we will receive less funding from the government and have to raise our own funding through student fees.
DeleteHi Terri, In one of the photos its says clothing production studio, do you have other studios? Are you making other things in your education? /Marita
ReplyDeleteHi Marita, we have a few different studios for different courses, such as fashion design, art & design, millinery, interior design, graphic design. The fashion design students study a different curriculum to the clothing production students. Although the curriculum is going to change and the 2 groups will study the same subjects.
ReplyDeleteHi Terri, now I wonder why the 2 groups will come together? Do you have less students for next year, or is there any other reason?
DeleteYes, the second year has less students. Some students find fashion much more difficult than expected.
DeleteHi! About the government funding and economy: You discribe a future change that maby will include student fees. Do you think it could bee possible to get sponsors from local businesses? Sell studentmade things? Have you discussed how this will effect learning, students kompetens?
ReplyDeleteHi Hanna, sadly industry does not support education here financially like it does in other countries. We use to make garments to sell when our course focused on production, but with off shore manufacturing it is no longer viable and the students work more on design so time does not allow for production of garments.
DeleteHow much time do the student gets to learn millinery? In my school it was a small course in third grade.
ReplyDeleteHi Emma, students can study millinery once a week during the evening. There a four courses which include hat blocking, making decorations such has flowers, restoring old hats and making fabric hats.
